A fine pair of famille rose alter vases, the bases with Buddhist emblems encircling the shoulder amidst lotus tendrils and flowers, bands of plantains below and double bands of decorative florets circling the flared foot, the necks with alternating ribbons of multicolored enamels, the separate cylindrical coned tops with floral decoration, a six character Jiaqing mark in overglaze red on a turquoise ground on the base. Possibly of the period. 19th C. 11 in. high.
Condition: One perfect. The other with minor glaze losses to the top as shown in the photos. The tops of the vases are simiular but not identical.
Provenance: Acquired from a Long Island, New York estate in 1995.
The form, decoration, style and quality of painting on this pair of alter vases are essentially identical to Jiaqing mark and period alter vases which also have a turquoise ground on the base. However, because the turquoise ground does not fully cover the base the pair has been given a 19th C designation rather than Jiaqing.
