Rare and fine famille rose rouleau vase with scenes of mountains, rivers and villages intricately and delicately drawn in a wide pallet of colors and shading so as to imitate classical Chinese paintings but with the use of a colored pallet, the body rising off of an indented foot and then tapering to a short neck with a rounded mouth rim, a four character hall mark in overglaze pink in a square reading "Yang he tang zhi", or "Hall for Cultivating Harmony" on the base. Republic Period. 11 in.
Provenance: Boston, Massachusetts Collection
This extremely fine vase with its multiple scenes of mountains, rivers and villages has a quality of painting artistry seldom achieved in porcelain manufacture. Not only is the detail of the painting superb but the artists ability to recreated the shading and splendor of mountain landscapes is equalled by few in the creation of Chinese porcelain irrespective of the period.
Vases of this quality are extremely rare and we have been unable to locate another example that has been published.
By repute the vase was given as a gift by the offices of President Sun Yat Sen to an American diplomat sometime in 1919 and held by the family until sold at an estate sale in Virginia in 1954 where thereafter it passed through several hands until acquired by Meiping Ltd. in 1981.
