Flambe Glazed Ovoid Vase 18h C
Of ovoid shape rising off of a short foot to a shoulder that gives way to the neck highlighted by the everted mouth rim, the unctuous flambe glaze covering the body but pooling neatly at the foot to reveal the white body, doing the same at the mouthrim but where the exposure of the white clay runs into the mouth before the flambe glaze continues, the entire surface highlighted by bands of milky lavender, the base unmarked. 18th C. 8 1/4 ".

Provenance: New York collection

Flambe glazes reached their highest level of refinement during the 18th C and were produced in many shapes. Compare a five lobed vase, 18th C, Sotheby's Hong Kong, October 27, 1993, lot 100; a flambe glazed bulb bowl, 18th C, Christies New York, December 1, 1988, lot 282; a flambe glazed meiping, Christies London, June 11, 1990, lot 296A. Compare also a similar shaped ovoid vase, but with a blue glaze, 18th C, Sotheby's New York, April 13, 1987, lot 330.

Few pieces of flambe glaze of this quality remain in the market.
