Six Jade Bowls,Dishes and Cups Qianlong Mark and Period
Comprising a pair each of bowls, dishes and cups, each well-carved with a sturdy ring foot, the rounded sides flaring to an everted rim, the smoothly finished jade of grayish-green with pale green veining, and incised Qianlong seal marks to the bases and of the period. Diam. of dishes 6 3/4 in.

Provenance: De-accessioned from the Art Institute of Chicago

The set originally was comprised of 14 pieces. Of those, eight were sold at Sotheby's New York, October 9, 1987 and the same eight were later re-sold at Christies New York, October 16, 2001, lot 313.

It is rare to find a fully vetted group of six Qianlong mark and period green jade bowls, dishes and cups made most likely at the same time, the entire original set probably to be used by the Qianlong Emperor or as a gift from him. No other examples except as noted above have been published.

Reproductions of 18th C jade reputably being made have created some uncertainty in the market. This has had the concomitant effect of causing upward pressure on the valuations of vetted jade pieces. At the same time growing numbers of Mainland Chinese are continuing to acquire jade with a Western provenance as they buy back their artistic heritage. Jade as a cultural matter has been revered and entwined in the fabric of China from the neolithic period to the present more so than any other medium.

The amount of vetted Imperial, mark and period Qianlong jade is finite. This set permits a serious collector to acquire important examples with certainty regarding their provenance. It also provides such a collector with the ability to not only live with and enjoy these works of art but participate in the upward movements in the market as more vetted jade pieces flow back to China while demand for them continues to rise.
