Carved Celadon Elongated Ovoid Vase Ming Dynasty
Fine celadon ovoid vase with carved clouds between criss-crossing lines forming a diaper pattern running from the foot to the neck, all under a crackled glaze, the suffused translucent celadon green covering the light brown biscuit of the body at the neck up to the mouth rim, the foot burnt orange in the firing. Ming Dynasty. 10 in. high

Provenance: Ohio. Original bill of sale from 1700's.

The celadon produced during the last half of the Ming Dynasty demonstrated the skill that the potters had developed in creating an ineluctable crackle in the celadon glaze that covered and highlighted the fine carving made in the biscuit of the body. The ovoid shape of this offering appears to be derived from the meiping form where the shoulders were brought into the plane of the body. For a nearly identical but larger Ming ovoid celadon vase, compare Christies New York, September 19, 2003, lot 325.
