Of a baluster shape rising up from a slight pedestal foot to the rounded shoulders that gives way to a long concave wide neck, the glaze pooling to mushroom at the everted mouth while the rich tones of the flambe glaze cover the entire body, pooling neatly at the foot, the base glazed white and unmarked. 18th/19th C. 15 in. high.
Condition: Excellent. No cracks, chips, hairlines or other damages except for a small rim frit on the mouth and several tiny glaze frits at the foot as shown in the photographs.
Provenance: Greenwich, Connecticut estate acquired prior to 1994.
The flambe glaze on this large baluster vase is particularly rich in its tones of blue and reds, first developed during the Kangxi period by Imperial kiln director Tang Ying in 1735 to emulate Jun glazes from the Song period. For an excellent example of this glaze see Christies New York, September 16, 2010, Lot 1439 and note the similarity between bluish striations on that Qianlong example and the bluish striations of the baluster vase offered here. Baluster vases of this flambe glaze are no longer available in the general American market.
