Fine Aubergine Charger Transitional/17th C
Very fine deep footed aubergine glazed charger, the rich color that identifies Transitional/early Kangxi wares covering the interior and the gently sloping sides of the exterior, stopping neatly at the foot, the base unglazed and exposing its white biscuit and wide footrim. Transitional/early Kangxi. 11 1/4 in. diam.

Condition: Perfect. No chips, cracks, hairlines or other damages.

Provenance: Manhattan, New York collection acquired in 1987.

For an identical example of the charger being offered here see Sotheby's New York, September 17, 2006, Lot 346. It is well recognized that the deep aubergine glaze of the 17th C is one of the most sought after and beautiful, with aubergine wares of this glaze commanding premium prices and interest. See, e.g. the a large aubergine-glazed bombe censer being offered at Christies'' New York, September 16, 2010, lot 1396. The charger offered here not only has this fine glaze, but the accentuated rounded sides of its shape is rare to the market. Pieces of this type are no longer available in the US.
