Fine Famille Rose Chrysanthemum Baluster Vase Republic
Of slender baluster form, finely enameled around the body with a large chrysanthemum bloom and tendrils, two brightly colored birds resting on branches, with florals encirling the base, a necklace of jewels around the mouth, the base with "China" written in overglaze red. Republic, probably made in the Jiangxi Ceramic Company. 7 1/2 in. high.

Condition: Perfect. No chips, cracks, hairlines or other damages. Some wear to gilt on mouth rim.

Provenance: Woodbury, Connecticut estate.

Slender baluster Republic floral and bird vases in very fine semi-eggshell white porcelain are extremely rare. The quality of the porcelain and decoration suggest that it was manufactured at the Jiangxi Ceramic Company known to have been established in 1910 and carried on business into the early years of the Republic. The Tariff Act of 1888 required a country of origin mark on all Chinese porcelain that was brought into the US, a requirement that ended in 1923.

For an example of a recent sale of a similar slender baluster vase from the same period made by the Jiangxi Ceramic Company but with a bearded scholar and his attendant see Chrisities HK, Sale 2811, May 31, 2010, Lot 2068 which realized a price of $19,413.
